Championships of County Cork 2008/ITF
A record entry and number of games played were just one of the highlights of the recently concluded Championships Of County Cork in the superbly turned out Rushbrooke Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Credit must go to tennis captain Eamonn Crotty and vice captain Colm Mc Donagh along with Roslyn Crotty and the rest of the tournament team who gave freely of their time to ensure that this tournament went like clockwork from start to finish. This was a brilliant effort from all to ensure that all players and visitors enjoyed their time with us throughout the tournament.
During the tournament in which 325matches with 339 players in 28 categories were played some brilliant play was observed and great matches were played in all grades culminating in finals day on Saturday 19th July followed by the prize giving in the clubhouse at the end of play. The main winners were Jamie Blake who was crowned men’s singles champion and also captured the doubles with his brother Cian and Niamh Coveney who took the accolade in the ladies singles event. Congratulations must go to all the winners and runners up in all grades who fought their way through some top opposition from the early rounds onwards and served up great finals on the last day. Well done to all the Rushbrooke players who had such an impact on the tournament and it was great to see many new members taking part in their maiden tournament.
During the presentations speakers included Mr.Niall Chandler, Eamonn Crotty, Mr Joe Rodgers and Diana Gilley president Munster Branch Tennis.
The overriding feature from the speeches during the prize giving was the way that everybody enjoyed the week and how everything was perfect from the running of the tournament, weather, condition of the courts, BBQ night and generally how people really enjoyed the great atmosphere during the week and this must go down to the current committee and the hard work and long hours which are now bearing fruit for the membership.
A special word must go to the three amigos on BBQ night .Mervyn “Ramsey” Burke, Mark “Worral” Barry and John “Harriett” Hewitt. The effort these lads put in really shone on the night and was greatly appreciated by all.
Finally a thank you again, to everybody who helped in any way to make this tournament one of the biggest successes for years and hope that next year we can have an even better week.
A special thank you to Diana Gilley and Evelyn Burke for the fantastic work that was put in by both during the recent ITF Tournament .The Tournament passed off without a hitch and brought a high level of tennis to Rushbrooke not seen before. Thanks to John for having the courts and grounds in top condition throughout both weeks.
Thanks to all.
